Skip counting is counting by a number that is not 1. You may know it as counting by 2’s or by 5’s or by 10’s or 100’s.
It’s a strategy to help kids to count large groups of items more efficiently. The skip counting process is an important precursor and foundation to many other mathematical concepts including: calculation fluency, number sense and multiplication and division.
Chanting a skip counting pattern is not the best way to learn about skip counting. Just like singing the ABC song doesn’t teach kids about letters, skip counting chants don’t teach kids about the skip counting process. It’s important that you spend time teaching your kids:
- why we use skip counting
- how to see the skip counting pattern
- continue the pattern
- predict what comes next in a skip counting pattern.

We always have a skip counting math center on the go in our classroom. They are great practice and consolidation activities that don’t need Teacher monitoring.

We got our kids to create their own sets of skip counting popsticks to go with the printable. This was actually a great number recognition activity in itself. So we could see if the kids could match the number digits to number words, as well as create the pattern.
