Teaching and learning ‘TEEN’ numbers can be tricky for everyone and just when you think your kids have ‘Got it!’ they go realise that they are totally confused about them because they think thirty and thirteen are the same!!! So to help with all the confusion about teaching the numbers 11-20, we have made some excellent activities that are heavily focused on using place value to build solid understandings.

Using Place value to learn the numbers 11-19 helps to wipe out the confusion between teen and ty numbers so there will be no more hesitation about the numbers 30, 31, 13, 31!

Details of the Activities

Activity 1 – Advanced – Students ‘Count it’ and ‘Write it ‘ mats for numbers 11-19.

  • There are 3 versions of the baseboard to select from for activity 1
  • Draw a number card either as a digit or a word and place it on the square frame on the mat
  • Next, break the number into tens and ones using the circle number pieces, place them on the mat
  • Match the smiley ten frames to the number
  • Complete the tens and 1’s  summary sentence – 3 versions

Activity 2 – Easy – Math Mats – Students ‘Count it’ and ‘Write it ‘ Math/Playdough Mats

  • There is a mat for each number 11-19 for activity 2
  • Students “Say the Number” and how many 10’s and 1’s it is made up of. Students can also make the number from playdough if using
  • Next, count out the correct number of materials and add them to the ten frames. Or use playdough
  • Finally, complete the summary sentence at the end describing the 10’s & 1’s needed to make the number

Activity 3 – Intermediate – Math Mats – Students ‘Trace it’ and ‘Show it’ Mats

  • There is a colour coded mat for each number 11-19 for activity 3
  • Students trace and colour the  number word
  • Next, they trace the number as tens and ones using the colour coding
  • Finally, students colour the correct amount of MAB math materials to ‘Show it’

Activity 4 – Advanced – Math Mats – Students ‘Trace it’ and ‘Show it’ Mats

  • There is 1 B&W baseboard for students to write the numbers 11-19 independently for activity 4
  • Students trace and colour the number in words word or use the cutout pieces to stick onto the board
  • Next, they trace the number as tens and ones using colour coding or use the cutout pieces to stick onto the board
  • Finally, students show the number by drawing materials onto the sheet to ‘Show it’or use the cutout pieces to stick onto the board

Activity 5 – All Levels – Cut, Sort, Stick Worksheets
