Subitising is the ability to see at a glance, how many there are in a collection, WITHOUT counting. It’s a fundamental Early Years math skill that can be taught using this hands-on math craft activity. What’s more your kids won’t realise they are doing math.

Ladybird Subitizing Craft Supplies
- Large white paper plate
- Red and black craft paint
- Paintbrushes
- Scissors
- Googly eyes
- Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- Black pipe cleaner cut in half
- Black permanent marker
- Dot dice for Step 4
- Subitizing Picture Books – Ten Black Dots
How To Make A Subitizing Ladybird Paper Plate Craft
Step 1
- Start by covering the painting area with newspaper or a wipe clean tablecloth. You will also need the red paint, paint brush & the paperplate for this step.
- Flip the paper plate over and place it face down.
- Paint the plate red. Set aside to dry.
Step 2
- Prep the black paint and a paint brush.
- Using the black paint, paint a small half circle on one side of the paper plate. this will be the Ladybird’s face.
Step 3
- Paint a black line coming down from the middle of the half-circle.
- Set aside to dry a little.
Step 4
- Use the dice to decide how many dots are going to be on the Ladybird.
- Roll the dice and encourage the student to subitise how many dots the can see, but WITHOUT counting.
- Next, paint that many dots using the black paint onto the ladybird.
- Roll and subitise as many times as desired.
- Set aside and allow time to dry.
Step 5
- When the paint is dry use the hot glue gun to glue the googly eyes on the black half-circle.
Step 6
- Turn the paperplate over to the wrong side and maek where the antenna are going using the black permanent marker.
- Cut the black pipe cleaner in half.
- Place a thin strip of hot glue on the marked area and then place a pipe cleaner half on each side to make the antenna.
Step 7
- Bend the antenna back over the ladybug’s face/head and curl the tips with your finger!
Step 8
Encourage the student to complete the “My Subitising Ladybird” label and staple to the Ladybird paperplate craft. Now you’re ready to Display!
