Learning about place value can be a struggle without hands-on activities. The concept of numbers having different values depending on the order they are written is a pretty abstract one.
Students have gone from learning the numbers 0-9 and getting a matching quantity, with no need for place value understanding. They have learnt that the number 2 means you get 2 items.
But Place Value turns this idea totally upside down!
When kids start to learn about place value they are being told that what they learned previously isn’t constant. They are now being told that 2 only means a quantity of two if it’s written in the ones place, and in a 3 digit number, the number 2 doesn’t represent 2 of something anymore.
In fact it has a very different value depending on if it’s the first, middle or last digit.
So you can totally understand the need for some math manipulatives and hands-on learning activities to help kids transition into place value understanding!
Base 10 Blocks or MAB are a must-have math material for helping students with place value understanding. They will help students to link quantity to digits by physically building numbers in groups of hundreds, tens and ones.
To help your students build strong Place Value understanding we’ve put together these 4 fun, and rather cute FREE place value dice games that can be used with math manipulatives.
(Please be aware that Place Value Blocks are not suitable for students who have not grasped the idea of making 10’s and ones using bundling activities).
